Post-Time Favorite One Fast Cajun Wins The $30,000 Faubourg St. John Stakes At Delta Downs

VINTON, LA–SEPTEMBER 3, 2022–The $30,000 Faubourg St. John Stakes is the first of six state-bred stakes slated for Saturday evening’s race card at Delta Downs. The 870-yard distance seems to be the ticket to the winner’s circle for One Fast Cajun who has 3 career wins with two of them at the 870-yard distance.

Guided by Ubaldo Luna, One Fast Cajun led the way gate-to-wire and crossed the finish line nearly 5-lengths ahead of Masons Jet Black. The post-time favorite trained by Danny Hoda clocked a 94 speed index in :46.099 seconds paying $4.20 to win.

Coming off a third place finish in the Live Oak Stakes to Masons Jet Black earlier this season, One Fast Cajun redeemed himself with this victory, upping his earnings to $60,210 for owners Darrin and Norman Ladner. Bred by Gabriel Terry, the 4-year-old son of Heza Fast Dash is out of Cajun Rocket by Lion Tamer.

Jockey Paulina Ramirez and runner-up Masons Jet Black, who has a race record of 6-6-3 from 22 lifetime starts, were the early morning-line favorites to win due to the fact that he’s won five of 13 870-yard distance races. Saddled by Juan Cano, the son of Jet Black Patriot has banked $139,623 in career earnings and has two previous stakes wins from Delta Downs and Sam Houston Race Park.

Breeder Trey Ellis entered Masons Jet Black in the 2018 LQHBA Yearling Sale but repurchased him for $9,500. Gidget Dugas is the current owner of the 5-year-old gelding out of Ruson Kitty by Eugene’s Third Son.

Jess Louisiana Boo, guided by Benito Baca came in third a half-length ahead of the race veteran Streak Of Music who placed fourth. The son of Jess Louisiana blue is trained by Phillips Calais, Jr and has 3 career wins with $74,630 in earnings. The Paul Daigle owned/bred gelding is out of La Boo Con by Sir Alibi.

Lolas Lil Ed placed fifth and Freighttrain Z placed sixth from the six horse line-up.

Delta Downs kicked off its final week of American Quarter Horse racing for 2022 on Friday night with an eight-race program featuring the $30,0000 De Saix Stakes for 2-year-old competing at 330 yards. The Louisiana track will complete its Quarter Horse season with a special 10-race program on Saturday with first post time at 6:15 pm. The card will include six stakes races headed by the $525,420 Louisiana Quarter Horse Association Futurity.
