Mister Bigg Holds Off Hot Girl Summer B In $53,760 Arizona Downs Quarter Horse Derby Saturday

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ–AUGUST 27, 2022–Mister Bigg turned the tables on fastest qualifier Hot Girl Summer B to win the $53,760 Arizona Downs Quarter Horse Derby by a head on Saturday at Arizona Downs.

Coming off a second-place effort in the trials to Hot Girl Summer B, Mister Big got the nod today while completing the 400 yards in as swift :19,511 seconds over a sloppy racecourse to earn a 108-speed index.

Trainer Heraclio Botello named jockey Aaron Belloc to ride the son of leading New Mexico sire Big Daddy Cartel for owner Diego Creus. A winner of three of 13 starts the brown gelding used the $31,718 payday to double his earnings total to $63,317.

Webb Ranch LLC bred Mister Bigg in New Mexico from the Jesse James Jr mare Sandys Jesse. The 3-year-old was third in The Plan Handicap at Los Alamitos and a finalist in the Los Alamitos Wild West Futurity (RG3) and Desert Classic Futurity.

Runner-up Hot Girl Summer entered the race as the fastest qualifier with a two-race win streak at the Arizona racetrack. In tight early under jockey Elias Gutierrez the daughter of Jess Louisiana Blue dueled throughout.

Trainer Havid Canez conditions the Louisiana-bred filly from the FDD Dynasty mare Greystone Girl B for owner Highland Park Racing Stables. Bred by Bielau Oaks, Hot Girl Summer B has compiled a (9) 2-2-2 record and picked up $10,752 to boost her earnings to $27,662.

Hp Just A Star was neck back in the blanket-finish to pick up $5,376 for third. Tim Holdaway saddled the son of Justified for himself and David Perry. The Utah homebred for Holdaway and Perry is out of Vocom Star by Volcom. Ridden by Michel Ybarra, Hp Just A Star earned $5,376 for the effort.

Completing the official order of finish were Bh Free Drop Billy, Thrill My Socks Off, Mr Icon Six, Candy Catch Aubrey, Carters Bayou Rose and Itsjustamatterof time. Wagon Coast was scratched at the gate.
