Shesa Knockoutcartel Wins The $87,637 Old South Derby At Delta Downs

VINTON, LA—MAY 20, 2022—Delta Downs hosted a nine-race program on Friday night that included the $87,637 Old South Derby for 3-year-olds competing at 350 yards. The event was won by BM AQ Racing, LLC’s Shesa Knockoutcartel under jockey Everardo Rodriguez.

Shesa Knockoutcartel, who is trained by Martin Trejo, also won the Louisiana Juvenile Stakes at Delta Downs last year as a 2-year-old and has now tallied four wins, two seconds and a third from nine lifetime starts.

Her win on Friday put another $44,713 into her bankroll which now stands at $111,213.

Shesa Knockoutcartel broke sharply from post position four in a field of nine Saturday and immediately went to the lead. Rodriguez called on her midway down the stretch and she responded by put a length between herself and Jesstice for All, who rallied for second. Jj Coronas Star wound up third, a head behind the runner-up.

Shesa Knockoutcartel covered the 350 yards of the Old South Derby in a time of :17.842 seconds, which equaled a speed index of 82.

Bred in Louisiana and owned by BM AQ Racing LLC, Shesa Knockoutcartel is a 3-year-old filly by Five Bar Cartel, out of the Royal Quick Dash mare Lady Knockout.

Runner-up Jesstice For All earned $15,203 for finishing second. M. Heath Taylor conditions the son of leading sire Corona Cartel for owners Denis and Julie Schoenhofer. Double Bar S Ranch LLC bred the bay gelding in Oklahoma from the Mr Jess Perry mare Jess Cuz. Ridden by Gilbert Ortez, Jesstice For All has banked $34,219.

Trainer Luis Martinez named jockey Guadalupe Lucio, Jr. to ride third-place finisher Jj Coronas Star for owner/breeder J and J Stables LLC. The son of champion sire Coronas Leaving You picked up $8,943 to boost his bankroll to $36,783. Bred in Louisiana, Jj Coronas Star is out of the Jess An Idea mare Jess A Little Star.

Sent to the post as a slight favorite at odds of just under 3-1, Shesa Knockoutcartel paid $7.80 to win, $3.80 to place and $2.80 to show. Jesstice for All was worth $4.80 to place and $3.40 to show. Jj Coronas Star returned $3.40 to show.

Jla Double Down Dash, Mr Teco, Ojd Miss Lola, Ajkiss This Corona, Queen On Eagle and Ddeez Kiss My Dash completed the field. Catch Me One Tee was scratched.

Delta Downs will close out its fourth week of live American Quarter Horse racing on Saturday night with a program that includes the $148,040 Old South Futurity as well as the $25,000 Mother’s Day Stakes. First post time is at 6:20 pm.
