Gias Fred Rallies To Set Top Mark In Old South Derby Trials

Gias Fred (#7) rallies over FDD Gentle Giant (#2) to set the fastest qualifying time in Monday's Old South Derby trials at Delta Downs.

VINTON, LA—MAY 10, 2021—Delta Downs kicked off their 2021 live racing season on Monday with four trials for the $72,215 Old South Futurity.

The 10 fastest qualifiers, from the 38 3-year-olds who contested today's 350 yard trials, will return Memorial Day (May 31st) to vie for the winner's share of the purse.

The lightly raced Gias Fred rallied to get up by a nose over FDD Gentle Giant in the second trial, setting the top qualifying time of :17.671 seconds, an 88 speed index into a 5 mph crosswind.

Trainer Richard Lane saddled the son of multiple stakes sire Paint Me Perry to his second career win in five starts for owner GIA Equine Center, LLC.

Bobby Ransom had the riding call aboard the South Carolina-bred from Miss Game Tee by Game Plan. He has earned $12,300 in five career starts.

Runnel-up FDD Gentle Giant held on to the second fastest clocking of :17.677 seconds, also an 88 speed index. Lanny Keith conditions the Texas homebred for owner-breeder Mercy Hinklin's Horse Farm, LLC.

Leonardo Rodriguez rode the FDD Going Grand filly out of A Noble Jess Elie by Jess Elie. She has compiled n s ca (8) 3-3-0 record and earned $23,750.
