Jess B One Prevails in $111,180 Evangeline Downs Derby

OPELOUSAS, LA—DECEMBER 12, 2020—Gene Cox's Jess B One got his first stakes victory on Saturday when he outkicked Wager On Your Wagon late to get his neck in front in the $111,180 Evangeline Downs Derby at Evangeline Downs. Wagons Dash was another head off the leaders in a blanket finish to take third.

Under jockey Juan Garcia, Jr., Jess B One completed the 400 yards in :19.639 seconds, equaling a 95 speed index on a fast racetrack. Trainer Trey Ellis saddled the son of leading sire Pyc Paint Your Wagon to his third career win in 13 career starts. The $55,590 winner's purse boosted his career earnings total to $187,450.

Homer Hill bred Jess B One in Oklahoma form the Mr Jess Perry mare Jess B Mighty. The brown gelding won an allowance at Ruidoso Downs over the summer. He was third in the Heritage Place Derby(G2) in May as well as fourth in last year's Heritage Place Futurity(G1) at Remington Park.

Wager On Your Wagon earned his first black type with a second-place effort in the EVD Derby for owner Jose Guzeman. Also a gelded son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon, Wager On Your Wagon is conditioned by Alonso Neri and ridden by Antonio Alberto. Bred by Atwood Ranches LLC, from the First Down Dash mare Sheza Shy Shahayla, the bay gelding earned $18,901 for his effort.

Wagons Dash made it a Pyc Paint Your Wagon tri-fecta with his third-place effort for owner Edward Scott and trainer Eric Long. Two races back the bay gelding finished second in the Grade 1 Dash For Cash Derby at Lone Star Park. Ridden by jockey Everardo Rodriguez he has compiled a (14) 4-5-2 record and the $11,118 show purse pushed his earnings to $111,748.

Im Tempting Girl, One Fast Perry, Kiss My Annee Gl, I Am Valiant, Hit Or Miss, Toreto and Passionate Paris completed the field.
