Saddled by trainer Homar Garza, Ww Showtime completed the 550 yards in :26.895 seconds over a rainy fast track to earn a 98 speed index. There was an 8 mph tailwind. It was the fourth win in 10 starts for the sorrel.
"First time for him at 550! We had run him at 400 and 440 and sometimes he made mistakes, but was closing at the end," Garza said. "We put a flipping rig on him and that worked out well."
The 4-year-old son of stakes sire First Prize Perry got his first career stakes win for owner Jaime Flores. Darrell Williams bred the colt in Louisiana from the Strawfly Special mare Ww Family Tradition. The $24,000 Delta 550 winners' purse doubled the Ww Showtime's earnings to nearly $52,000.
Strong Guns earned $8,000 for owner Lester Colomb, Jr. and trainer Kenneth Weeks. David Alvarez was aboard the Strong Hope gelding out of Gunslinger Girl, by First Down Jewel. V W Racing bred the graded stakes-placed earner of $84,505 in Louisiana.
