VINTON, LA–JUNE 23, 2023–Graded stakes winner One Sweet Sugar won her third consecutive race on Friday night enroute to posting the fastest qualifying time for this year’s $634,792 Lee Berwick Futurity (RG1) at Delta Downs.

The Jesus Marquez trainee came into the eighth of 12 trials on the program off a win in the $327,000 Lassie Futurity (RG2) on May 26.

Under regular rider Jasiel Aquino, One Sweet Sugar made quick work of her rivals in the Lee Berwick trial which was contested over a sealed racetrack listed as sloppy. The property of Rogelio Marquez, Jr. stopped the timer in :17.524 seconds. The effort earned her a speed index of 93.

One Sweet Sugar has now won three of six career starts and earned $202,392 after taking home $6,000 on Friday. Each trial race carried a purse of $10,000.

Bred in Louisiana by her owner, One Sweet Sugar is a 2-year-old sorrel filly by One Sweet Jess, out of the Heza Fast Dash mare Sugarshaker B.

This is the immediate family of All American Futurity(G1) winner and champion sire Teller Cartel.

The connections of Rogelio Marquez, Jr. and Jesus Marquez also made it to the Lee Berwick final with the second fastest qualifier of the night, San Lorenzo Blood, who took the fourth trial under jockey David Alvarez.

San Lorenzo Blood won the $365,000 Mardi Gras Futurity (RG2) at Louisiana Downs on March 25 before finished fourth after a troubled trip in the Lassie Futurity.

Slash Z Quarter Horses bred the $70,000 LQHBA Yearling Sale filly by leading sire Apollitical Blood from the Valiant Hero mare Ms Valiant Perry. She has banked $202,795 in five starts this season.
