San Lorenzo Dash Wins The Mother’s Day Stakes At Delta Downs

VINTON, LA–MAY 13, 2023–Delta Downs closed out its third week of American Quarter Horse racing for 2023 with a nine-race program featuring the $33,900 Mother’s Day Stakes for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up.

The 350-yard event was won by Rogelio Marquez, Jr.’s San Lorenzo Dash under jockey Ubaldo Luna for trainer Jesus Marquez.

San Lorenzo Dash broke sharply from the inside post position in the Mother’s Day and quickly opened a wide lead in the 350-yard test for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up. The race was never in doubt as she reported home 1-3/4 lengths in front of longshot runner-up Lrh Heart of Glass, while Hallmarke finished another half-length behind the top pair in third.

San Lorenzo Dash covered the distance over a fast track in a time of 17.436 seconds. That time equaled a speed index of 96. The win marked her second stakes score of the season as she also took the Delta Dash Stakes on opening day of the meeting, April 28. Overall, she has won eight of 19 starts and earned a total of $148,014.

Bred in Louisiana by her owner, San Lorenzo Dash is a 4-year-old sorrel mare by leading sire Heza Fast Dash, out of the One Famous Eagle mare San Lorenzo Eagle.

Lrh Heart Of Glass, under jockey Everardo Rodriguez, earned $7,000 for her second-place effort. Josue Huitron conditions the 4-yeare-old daughter of multiple stakes sire Five Bar Cartel for owner Carlos Campos. Jetty and Donald Lemaire bred the graded-placed filly from the Oak Tree Special mare Lrh Heartofanoak. She has earned $120,932 in 21 career starts.

Trainer Justin Powell named jockey Gilbert Ortiz to ride third-place finisher Hallmarke for owner Laney Fowler. Bobby D. Cox bred the Duponte 4-year-old in Texas from the First Down Dash mare Zenergy. Hallmarke earned $2,750 for her effort.  Winner of the Cherokee Overnight Stakes two race back she has earned nearly $90,000.

Sent to the gate as the wagering favorite at odds of 6-5, San Lorenzo Dash paid $4.60 to win, $3.20 to place and $2.80 to show. Lrh Heart Of Glass was worth $10.60 to place and $6 to show. Hallmarke returned $6 to show.
