Aj Train Rolls To Fastest Time In The Laddie Futurity Trials At Delta Downs

VINTON, LA–MAY 5, 2023–Delta Downs hosted 12 qualifying trials for this year’s $280,271 Laddie Futurity on Friday night.

The fastest qualifier was Adelita Lopez’s Aj Train, who won the third trial of the evening under jockey Juan Garcia, Jr. The rich final for the Louisiana-bred event for 2-year-old colts and geldings will take place on Saturday, May 27.

Aj Train, who is trained by Dwayne Breaux, was making his career debut in the Laddie trials and was ultra- impressive breaking from post position two. The sorrel colt made quick work of his rivals and stopped the clock in a time of 16.980 seconds for 330 yards. The effort earned him a speed index of 85.

Bred in Louisiana by Steve A. Holt, Aj Train is by Freighttrain B, out of the Apollitical Jess mare Apollotah. He was purchased for $67,000 at the 2022 Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Yearling Sale.

Each trial carried a purse of $10,000 on Friday and the share for each winner on the night was $6,000. The winner of the final will take home a paycheck of $140,135.

In addition to his win aboard Aj Train, Garcia also scored victories with Corona123 in the fifth race and longshot Mr Habits Running in the seventh. Other jockeys with riding multiples on the card included Guadalupe Lucio, Jr. (three wins and two finalists), and Rolando Cabrera (two wins).

Hogwartz broke his maiden in the eighth race to secure the second fastest clocking of :17.026 seconds into a 5 mph crosswind. Jockey Guadalupe Lucio, Jr. hand the riding call aboard the Mr Piloto gelding for trainer Philip Calais Jr.

Casey Calais, David Coleman and Belinda Vincent own the 2-year-old out of Jls Sheza Fisher, by Fishers Dash.  Bred by Casey Calais, Hogwartz was second in his only other start, a trial for the Mardi Gras Futurity.

Cartel Roses Z broke his maiden at first asking in the opening trial to earn the third fastest time of :17.048 seconds, into a 5 mph crosswind. Emmanual Hernandez Padilla purchased the son of multiple stakes sire Five Bar Cartel for $20,000 at the LQHBA Yearling Sale.

Slash Z Quarter Horses bred Cartel Roses from the First Down Dash mare Yellow Rose B. The second dam is the multiple stakes producing Mr Jess Perry mare Mon Ti Fleur.

Delta Downs will conduct 12 trials for this year’s $280,271 Louisiana Laddie Futurity (RG2) on Friday night. The 10 fastest times will make it to the final of the big race coming up on Saturday, May 27. There is a special early first post time for the Friday card at 5:25 pm (CDT).
