One Sweet Sugar Sets Fastest Time On Night 2 of Trials For The $327,272 Lassie Futurity at Delta


One Sweet Sugar, under jockey Jasiel Aquino breaks her maiden in the closing trial to set the fastest qualifying time on night 2 for the restricted Grade 1 Louisiana Lassie Futurity at Delta Downs.

VINTON, LA–MAY 4, 2023–Delta Downs hosted the final eight qualifying trials for this year’s $327,272 Louisiana Lassie Futurity (RG2) on Thursday night. The top five times of the evening will join the five fastest qualifiers from the eight trials that were conducted on Wednesday (see related story) in the final on Friday, May 26.

Thursday’s fastest time was recorded by Rogelio Marquez, Jr.’s One Sweet Sugar, who won the final trial of the night under jockey Jasiel Aquino. The Jesus Marquez trainee broke her maiden in the trial after finishing second in a trial for the Mardi Gras Futurity and finishing fourth in the final at Louisiana Downs.

One Sweet Sugar covered 330 yards in her Lassie trial in a time of 16.787 while running on a fast track. The effort earned her a speed index of 90.

Each Lassie trial carried a purse of $10,000 and the $6,000 winner’s share raised One Sweet Sugar’s career bankroll to $32,756.

Bred in Louisiana by her owner, One Sweet Sugar is a sorrel filly by One Sweet Jess, out of the Heza Fast Dash mare Sugarshaker B.

Leaving the gate as the favorite in her trial, One Sweet Sugar paid $4.20 to win.

Mardi Gras Futurity(RG2) runner—up Eyesa Just Pretty got her second career win in the seventh under jockey Eric Reyes to set the second fastest clocking of :16.895 seconds or owner Blackmon Quarter Horses LLC. Conditioned by Janessa Muniz the daughter of champion Carters Cartel was a 1-1/2 length winner to boost her bankroll to $71,644.

A $13,000 LQHBA Sale graduate, the brown filly is the first foal from the stakes-placed Thoroughbred mare Eye Craft, a half-sister to three-time imported sprint champion Crime Of Passion (TB).This is the female family of Thoroughbred Horse of the Year Holy Bull.

Prom Queen Nr raced to a three quarter-length win in the second trial to get the second fastest clocking of :16.956 seconds for owner-breeder William P. Nolan. Benito Baca had the riding call aboard the Inseperable filly for champion trainer Kenneth Roberts, Sr. In her only other start Prom Queen Nr broke her maiden at Louisiana Downs March 23.

A $6,500 LQHBA Yearling Sale repurchase, Prom Queen Nr is the first foal of This Girls A Runaway, a half-sister to stakes winners This Featureisspecial and Im A Feature Girl. This is the family of champion Jess Louisiana Blue.

The fifth fastest qualifiers, Jambalaya Empress also came out of the second trial.

Delta Downs will conduct 12 trials for this year’s $280,271 Louisiana Laddie Futurity (RG2) on Friday night. The 10 fastest times will make it to the final of the big race coming up on Saturday, May 27. There is a special early first post time for the Friday card at 5:25 pm.(CDT).
