Streakin Fast Blood and San Lorenzita Battle For Fastest Time In Old South Futurity Trials


Streakin Fast Blood (#2) gets up over San Lorenzita (#3) in the fastest trial Saturday for the Ole South Futurity at Delta Downs.

VINTON, LA–APRIL 29, 2023–Streakin Fast Blood dueled San Lorenzita early before getting up at the wire to set the fastest qualifying time from nine trials contested Saturday night at Delta Downs for the Old South Futurity.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will faceoff at the Vinton, Louisiana raceway on Saturday, May 20 to vie for the winner's share of a $170,840 purse gong 330 yards.

Ridden by jockey J.R. Ramirez, Streakin Fast Blood completed his task in :17.103 seconds, an 81 speed index, to garner the fastest time. Willie J. Simien, Jr. trains the Texas homebred for owner-breeder Maria Guadalupe Araiza.

This was the second consecutive win for the daughter of leading sire Apollitical Blood. She broke her maiden at first asking on March 23 at Louisiana Downs. Out of the Streakin La Jolla mare Southern La Jolla, Streakin Fast Blood was a one-length winner in her career debut. She has earned $6,600 in two starts.

Finishing a head back in the fastest trial, San Lorenzita held on to the second fastest qualifying time of :17.117 seconds for owner-breeder Rodrigo Marquez, Jr.  Jesus Marquez conditions the Ivan James filly out of multiple graded stakes winner Dashnunder Afullmoon by Heza Fast Dash.  Fourth in the Grade 2 Louisiana Downs Futurity in her last start, San Lorenzita has earned $25,333 in three starts. Rolando Cabrera was riding.

Frankie Jr broke his maiden in the seventh trial with an impressive two-length win under jockey Arturo Alvarez. The son of first-crop sire Kas Tempting posted the third fastest clocking of :17.152 seconds. Jose Luis Sanchez III saddled the Texas-bred gelding for owner Jimme Rodriguez.  Angel, Roberto, Laure and Garza bred Frankie Jr from the Stoli mare Fear This Stoli.

Another first-crop sire, champion Flying Cowboy 123, also got a finalist when Woopaa123 finished fourth in the fastest trial. The 2-year-old gelding was fifth in the Grade 2 Louisiana Downs Futurity in his last start.

Delta Downs will conduct live racing next week, Wednesday through Saturday. Qualifying trials for this year’s Lassie Futurity will be conducted on Wednesday and Thursday. There will be 12 Laddie Futurity trials on Friday with a special early post time of 5:25 pm that night. Saturday’s card will start at the normal 6:15 pm post time.
