Pappacito Best In Old South Derby Trials Friday at Delta Downs

VINTON, LA–APRIL 28, 2023–In his first start this season Grade 2 placed Pappacito, under jockey Gilbert Ortiz, was an easy one-length winner in the second of four trials Friday night while setting the fastest qualifying time for the Old South Futurity at Delta Downs.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to the Vinton, Louisiana racetrack on Friday, May 19 to vie for the winner's share of a $108,615 purse going 350 yards.

Conditioned by champion trainer M. Heath Taylor, Pappacito completed his task in :17.720 seconds to establish the top qualifying mark.  Robin L. Redding owns the son of multiple stakes sire Ivory James

Bred in Texas by Bobby D. Cox, from the Apollitical Jess mare Apolitical Pac, Pappacito was third in the Grade 2 Firecracker Futurity at Delta last summer.  A winner of three of six starts the gray gelding has earned $46,587.

Mr Carter stepped up in the third trial to get the second fastest time of :17.865 seconds. Jockey Jorge Garcia had the riding call aboard the son of All American Futurity(G1) winner Mr Piloto for owner Jose E. Flores.

It was the third win four starts this year for the Roberto Madrigal trained-ed gelding out of Ms Wandas Classy by Heza Fast Dash. Arnold Trahan bred the earner of $31,597.
