Ruidoso Sale Graduate Breaks Maiden In Old South Futurity at Delta Downs

VINTON, LA—MAY 11, 2019—Big Daddy Jewel, a $13,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale graduate, broke his maiden Saturday night by defeating Locomotive by a head in the $104,705 Old South Futurity at Delta Downs.

With a solid rally under jockey Randy Edison, Big Daddy Jewel completed the 330 yards in :16.722 seconds, a 96 speed index over a muddy (sealed) racecourse. The son of multiple stake sire Big Daddy Cartel ran his record to (3) 1-2-0 and the $52,353 winners' purse boosted his bankroll to nearly $57,000.

Trainer M. Heath Taylor conditions the gray colt for brothers Chris Dunn and David Dunn and Rebecca Jameson. Jerry West bred the half-brother to four black type in Louisiana from the RG2-winning First Down Jewel mare Jewels Fortune.

The trainer-jockey combination of Taylor and Edison picked up their second consecutive stakes win on the Delta Card after scoring in the Mother's Day Stakes (see related story) earlier in the night.

Bobby D. Cox's homebred Locomotive finished second for trainer Kenneth Roberts, Sr. David Alvarez rode the Freighttrain B gelding out of Shescheckinumout by Check Him Out. The 2-year-old earned $17,800 for the effort.

Cox and Roberts also teamed with another Cox homebred, Apollitical Xpression, to finish third. Donald Watson rode the Freighttrain B filly form the Apollitical Jess mare Apollitical Pac. She earned $10,471 for the effort.

Sent to the gate at odds of 5-1, Big Daddy Jewel paid $13.20 to win, $7 to place and $4.20 to show. Locomotiv paid $34 to place and $12.80 to show. Apolitical Xpression returned $3.20 to show.

Dash Master Queen, Chasin de Starts, Chicks Ivory House, A Game Jess, Jess Worthy and Worth A Google completed the field. Ivory Bones hit the inside rail and lost rider Noe Castaneda.

Delta Downs will begin its fifth week of American Quarter Horse racing on Wednesday night with another 10-race program that begins at 6:15 pm CST.
