Thirty-One Louisiana-Bred 3-Year-Olds Entered in Delta Downs Derby Trials

VINTON, LA—JULY 5, 2021—Thirty-one Louisiana-bred sophomores, topped by stakes winners A Double Corona and Apollitical High, are entered in Friday’s 400-yard Delta Downs Derby (RG3) trials at Delta Downs.
A Double Corona and Apollitical High are both entered in the last of four trials. A homebred son of Open Me A Corona racing for Tommy Hays and Bobby J. Barnett, A Double Corona will be making his first start since December 19, when the gelding ran third, a neck behind winner San Lorenzo, in the 400-yard, $1-million Louisiana QHBA Million Futurity (RG1) at Evangeline Downs.
A Double Corona has earned $339,933 from six races, and his three wins include a 1 1/2-length victory in the 350-yard, $476,000 LQHBA Sale Futurity (RG1) at Evangeline Downs. The gelding drew post 4 and will be ridden by Eddie Sanchez for trainer Jose Luis Sanchez III.
Apollitical High drew post 5 and will be ridden by David Alvarez for owner Rosendo Valdez and trainer Rosendo Valdez Jr. A sorrel Apollitical Blood gelding and a $12,000 purchase at the 2019 Louisiana QHBA Yearling Sale, Apollitical High has won all three of his outs this season, including the 400-yard, $121,000 Mardi Gras Derby (R) at Louisiana Downs on March 27.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from Friday’s trials will meet in the $100,000-added Delta Downs Derby final on July 31.
