OPELOUSAS, LA—NOVEMBER 15, 2017—Gary W. Hartstack’s JRS Coronas Shadow, a graded stakes winning son of Coronas Leaving You, will make his first start more than four months in Saturday’s 400-yard LQHBA Breeders’ Derby (R) trials Evangeline Downs.
Trained by Kenneth Roberts Sr., JRS Coronas Shadow has earned $158,143 from five races this year, and his season resume includes a half-length victory at odds of 12-1 in the 400-yard, $257,000 Delta Downs Derby (RG1) at Delta Downs on July 8. The gelding drew post 3 and will be ridden by David Alvarez in the last of three trials.
Roberts will also send out First Prize Bourban, a stakes-winning Coronas Leaving You gelding owned by Charles J. Boudreaux Jr., in the first heat. First Prize Bourban is coming off of a half-length win as the 13-10 favorite in the 350-yard, $40,000 Treme Derby (R) for Louisiana-bred 3-year-olds at Fair Grounds Racecourse on August 19.
Donald Watson will ride First Prize Bourban from post 4.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the December 16, $150,000-added LQHBA Breeders’ Derby final.
