RGs Gold Wagon Draws Post 2 for Friday's $106,600 Evangeline Downs Derby


Evangeline Downs Futurity winner Rgs Gold Wagon will look to make it a double in the $106,600 Evangeline Downs Derby at Evangeline Downs Friday night.

OPELOUSAS, LA–DECEMBER 11, 2023–Fastest qualifier RGs Gold Wagon heads a field of 10 sophomores entered back in Friday's 400-yard, $106,600 Evangeline Downs Derby at Evangeline Downs.

A homebred son of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon stallion Prized Wagon, RGs Gold Wagon races for Mauricio Garza from the barn of trainer Janessa Muniz. The Oklahoma-bred gelding is coming off of a head victory in the last of four trials on November 18. He's won six of 20 races and has earned $293,105, and his three wins in as many outs at Evangeline Downs includes a half-length victory in last year's 400-yard, $306,000 Evangeline Downs Futurity.

RGs Gold Wagon drew post 2 and will be ridden by Edgar Mata. Other contenders include Emanuel Villarreal's Ganadero, a stakes-winning son of Big Daddy Cartel trained by Juan Diaz Jr. A $14,000 yearling purchase at the 2021 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, the gelding has banked $49,795 from six outs this year, and his three wins include the August 27, $94,000 Gillespie County Fair Derby at Fredericksburg, Texas.

Ganadero drew post 5 and will be ridden by Victor Urieta Jr.
