Thirty 3-Year-Olds are Entered in Saturday's Evangeline Downs Derby Trials

OPELOUSAS, LA–NOVEMBER 13, 2023–Stakes winners C S Fierro, Pappacito, and Ganadero are three of the 30 sophomores entered in Saturday's Evangeline Downs Derby trials at Evangeline Downs Racetrack.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from Saturday's four 400-yard heats will meet in the December 15, $50,000-added final.

C S Fierro is a homebred son of the First Down Dash stallion Volcom racing for Iselda Alvarez. The gelding has earned $43,197 from four outs this season, and he is coming off of a head victory at odds of 30-1 in the August 19, $100,000 TQHA Sires' Cup Derby (R) at Retama Park.

C S Fierro drew post 2 and will be ridden by H. Javier Hernandez in the first trial.

Pappacito has earned $70,608 from five races this year, and his three wins include a 1 1/4-length win in the 350-yard, $109,000 Old South Derby at Delta Downs on May 19. Fernando Valdez trains the gelded son of Apollitical Blood for owner Rosendo Valdez.

Pappacito drew post 4 and will be ridden by James Flores in the third heat.

A gray son of Big Daddy Cartel, Ganadero will be making his first start since August 27, when he rallied to win the 350-yard, $94,000 Gillespie County Fair Derby at Fredericksburg, Texas. Juan Diaz Jr. trains the gelding for ownerr Emanuel Villarreal.

Ganadero drew post 7 and will be ridden by Nestor Duran in the fourth trial.
