Hot Prize Scores An Upset In The $20,000 Evangeline Downs Dash

OPELOUSAS, LA—NOVEMBER 19, 2020—The $20,000 Evangeline Downs Dash took place on Thursday night and the race was settled right at the start, as Hot Prize broke on top and led throughout to post a victory by a neck.

The final time for the 220 yards was :11.835 seconds, which equaled a speed index of 91 over the fast track.

Hot Prize was bred in Louisiana by Jack Willie. She is owned by Annette Faul, trained by Robi Meche and was ridden to victory by Noe Castaneda. The 4-year-old filly is by Fast Prize Dash and is out of the Corona Caliente mare, Hot Dare.

The win on Thursday night was her seventh in 29 lifetime starts and the $12,000 first-prize purse increases her career earnings to $95,143.

Runner-up Jess Redwhiteandblue races for owner Joseph Landreneau and trainer Lanny Keith. Jim and Natalie Montgomery bred the Jess Louisiana Blue gelding from the Azoom mare Ha Chi Mama. Leonardo Rodriguez had the riding call to pick up $4,000, pushing Jess Redwhiteandblue's earnings total to nearly $106,000.

Rf Fast Dash N Blue finished one-half length back to take third for owner Rogers Farm. Trainer Vann Haywood saddled the Jess Louisiana Blue gelding out of Fast Dash N Deb by Heza Fast Dash. The $2,200 payday boosted the sorrel geldings earnings total to $123,920. Gilbert Oritz was riding.

Hot Prize paid $29 to win, $8.80 to place and $4.80 to show. The 8-5 betting favorite, Jess Redwhiteandblue finished second and paid $3.60 to place and $2.40 to show, while Rf Fast Dash N Blue returned $2.40 to show. Escandalo, Cajun Cos, Mighty Pocket Rocket, Jets Fast Dash, Seis Train B, Coronastripleking and Little Toy Guns completed the field.

Racing at Evangeline Downs will resume on Friday night with a nine-race program featuring the first seven trials for the LQHBA Louisiana Million. Post time on Friday will be 5:35 pm Central Time.
