Coronado Hussle Scores Fastest Time For Old South Futurity At Delta Downs


Coronado Hussle, under jockey Rolando Pina, setting the fastest time from 10 trials contest Thursday for the Old South Futurity at Delta Downs.

VINTON, LA—JUNE 10, 2020—Delta Downs hosted 10 trials for this year’s Old South Futurity on Thursday night and the fastest qualifier of the evening was Coronado Hussle under jockey Rolando Pina.

The Eric Long trainer stopped the timer in 16.581 seconds for 330 yards while winning the eighth trial on the program. Each heat was contested over a fast track.

Owned by Q and S Racing (Quincy Grant), Coronado Hussle has now won two-of-three career starts. After finishing off the board in his debut during the Harrah’s Futurity trials at Louisiana Downs on March 1, he then broke his maiden two weeks later at the same racetrack.

Coronado Hussle is a 2-year-old gelding by leading third-crop sire Coronado Cartel out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Miss Jess Corona. He was bred in Louisiana by Arkofa Farm.

The top three qualifiers came out of the eighth trial including Hennessy Xo Tlc, under jockey Francisco Calderon, who held on for the second fastest time of :16.730 seconds, a 91 speed index.

A $16,500 repurchase at the Heritage Place September Yearling Sale, by champion sire The Louisiana Cartel, races for owner-trainer Jorge Haddad. Tate Farms bred the bay gelding from the graded winner and producer Xo Kate by Stoli.

The third qualifier from trial eight, Mr Jj Pvc Eagle, races for owner-breeder J & J Stables LLC. Jose Carrizales conditions the son of world champion One Dashing Eagle from the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare JB Mrs Pyc. Ricardo Hernandez, Jr. was aboard to stop the clock in :16.734 seconds, also a 91 speed index.

One Dashing Eagle was the only sire with multiple qualifiers also getting 8th fastest When Eagles Fly. First-crop sire Docs Best Card sired the 6th fastest qualifier Card One Starter.

Each trial race on Thursday night carried a purse of $5,000 and the winner’s each received $3,000. The final of this year’s Old South Futurity will take place on Saturday, July 4 and the winner that night will pocket $75,627. Delta Downs will continue opening week of racing on Friday with an expanded 15-race program. Each race is a trial for this year’s $329,410 Louisiana Lassie Futurity (RG2) for 2-year-old fillies bred in the Bayou State. There is a special first post time of 3:50 pm (CDT).
