OPELOUSAS, LA—SEPTEMBER 28, 2019—Corona Down Perry had started just once at Evangeline Downs prior to Saturday night’s $30,000 Billy Montgomery Stakes. In that previous start here, she scored her maiden-breaking victory in a $10,000 Maiden Claiming race on November 28, 2018.

The filly managed to keep her Evangeline Downs record perfect with a 14-1 upset victory in the Billy Montgomery under jockey David Alvarez.

Although dismissed by the bettors, Corona Down Perry broke extremely well on Saturday night and was in contention from the start. She did drift from the center of the track to the outside during the course of the race, but was able to maintain the top spot and win by a head in a final time of 16.722 for the 330-yards, which equals a speed index of 94.

Corona Down Perry paid $30.40 to win, $14.20 to place and $4.20 to show. High and Caliente returned $9.80 to place and $4.80. There was a dead-heat for third between the two betting favorite, Rogue One and Fastdashing Lassie with each paying $2.10 to show.

Corona Down Perry was bred in Louisiana by Grant Farms, LLC. The 3-year-old filly is owned by Carlos Acuna and trained by Martin Trejo. Corona Down Perry is by multiple stakes sire Coronas Leaving You and is out of the Mr Jess Perry mare, Second Down Perry. She is now 4-for-13 in her career and the $18,000 first-place purse increases her lifetime earnings to $45,893.

Runner-up High And Caliente earned $6,000 for second. Owned-and-trained by Manuel Pizana, jockey Heriberto Aguilar-Orozco had the riding call aboard the 3-year-old Whathaveigottado filly out of High On Sissy High by Game Patriot. Jesse Rodriguez, Jr. bred the earner of $67,530.

Fastdashing Lassie and Rogue One split the show money, earning $2,550 each for their deadheat.

Trainer Kenneth Roberts, Sr. saddled the 4-year-old Heza Fast Dash filly for owner Montgomery Equine Center. Jumonville Farms and Burnett Ranch bred the brown filly form the Feature Mr Jess mare The Louisiana Lassie. Donald Watson was riding the multiple stakes earner of $92,460.

Rogue One, also a daughter of Heza Fast Dash, races for Rouge Equine LLC and is conditioned by Martin Trejo. Everado Rodriguez had the riding call aboard the multiple stakes-placed 3-year-old out of Miss Jess Rogue by Mr Jess Perry. Triple M Farms LLC bred the earner of $85,469.

Completing the field was Google Chrome B, Flamin Hot Fortune, Fit For First, Brexit and Non Stop Patriot. Ajs Corona Chick was a late scratch.

Live racing at Evangeline Downs will resume on Wednesday night with a nine-race program. Post time on Wednesday will be 5:35 pm Central Time.
