Mag 1 Wins As 6-5 Favorite , Tf Rowdy Cartel Scores A 25-1 Upset in Two Divisions of EVD Dash


Mag 1 romps to victory in first of two divisions for the $20,000 Evangeline Downs Dash Friday night at Evangeline Downs.

OPELOUSAS, LA—SEPTEMBER 27, 2019—The $20,000 Evangeline Downs Dash drew so much interest from the connections anxious to get off to a good start this season that the race was split into two divisions on the Opening Night program of the 2019 American Quarter Horse season.

Mag 1 was working a three-race winning streak entering the first division of the $20,000 Evangeline Downs Dash on Friday night. He impressively ran that streak to four victories in a row, collecting his first stakes win in the process, finishing the 220-yard distance in 11.773 seconds over the fast track, which equals a speed index of 95.

Mag 1 returned $4.60 to win, $3.40 to place and $3.20 to show. Cant Catchacorona paid $4.40 to place and $3.40 to show, while Mighty Pocket Rocket returned $9.20 to show.

Mag 1 was bred in Louisiana by H & M Racing. The 3-year-old gelding is owned by Mag 3 Racing and was ridden to victory by Damian Martinez. Mag 1 is by Mr Jess Kue and is out of the Oak Tree Special mare, Oak Tree Chic. He is now four for six in his career and the $12,000 first-place purse increases his lifetime earnings to $59,535.

T M Ranch's Cant Catchacorona picked up $4,000 for his hisi second-place effort. Kenny Roberts, Sr. conditions the Coronas Leaving You 4-year-old brother to champion Open Me A Corona. Everado Rodriguez had the riding call on the Jim and Natalie Montgomery bred out of In The Open by Mr Eye Opener.

Mighty Pocket Rocket, a son of Mighty Corona, earned $2,200 for third. Jockey Ubaldo Luna had the ridng call for trainer Mark Langford. Tyler Langford owns the homebred gelding out of Raise The Sky by Pie In The Sky.

Jess A Boy, Valiant Rogue, Packin A Punch, Tk Zoomaway, Follow My Wagon and Fast N Famous Eagle completed the field.

Evangeline Downs Dash-Div. II

Unlike Mag 1, who was the 6-5 favorite in the first division, Tf Rowdy Cartel was passed over by the betting public in the second division of the $20,000 Evangeline Downs Dash and sent off at odds of 25-1.

The 3-year-old gelding broke right on top and never looked back, scoring a huge upset to win in a final time of 11.714 seconds, which equals a speed index of 98.

Tf Rowdy Cartel paid $53.40 to win, $21.40 to place and $7.20 to show. Jets Fast Dash returned $10.60 to place and $5.40 to show, while Vallerro paid $3.60 to show.

Tf Rowdy Cartel was bred in Louisiana by Tate Farms and Stoney Meadow Farms.

He is owned by Jaime Torres, trained by Pedro Lopez and was ridden to victory by Eleazar Hernandez. The win was the fourth in 11 lifetime starts and for the Coronado Cartel gelding out of Cashy La Jolla, by Streakin La Jolla, and the $12,000 first-place purse increases his lifetime earnings to $34,183.

Lanny Keith conditions runner-up Jets Fast Dash, a son of Jet Black Patriot, for owner-breeder Dan-Nan, Inc. John Hamilton rode the gelding pout of Skippie Fast Dash by Heza Fast Dash. He earned $4,000 for the effort.

Ascencion Cepeda's Vallerro earned $2,200 for third. Hector Alcala trains the Colorado-bred son of Valiant Hero from the Mr Jess Perry mare Perrys Queen Bug. Heriberto Aguilar-Orozco had the riding call. George Seward is the breeder .

Zapata Chic, Cajun Cos, Corona Prize, Gunna Be Alright, Little Toy Guns and First Easy Doc completed the field.

Live racing at Evangeline Downs will resume on Saturday night with a nine-race program. The featured event on Saturday night will be the $30,000 Billy Montgomery Stakes. Post time on Saturday will be 5:35 pm Central Time.
