Anasttasia Gets Third Straight Win, Sets Top Mark In Old South Derby Trials


Anasttasia, under jockey Luis Vivanco, cruises to the fastest qualifying time for the $74,115 Old South Derby Friday night at Delta Downs.

VINTON, LA—APRIL 19, 2019—Jorge Haddad's stakes winning Texas homebred Anasttasia scored a 1-˝ length win in the first of five trials Friday night for the Old South Derby at Delta Downs.

Ridden by jockey Luis Vivanco the daughter of champion sire The Louisiana Cartel completed the 350 yards in a quick :17.139 clocking, into a 6 mph headwind, to earn a 104 speed index and get the fastest qualifying time.

Champion trainer Kenneth Roberts, Sr. saddled the bay filly out of the multiple grade 1 producing First Down Dash mare Las Alamitos. Anasttasia, winner of the Iowa Gold Futurity last September at Prairie Meadows was making her 3-year-old debut in tonight's trials. She has compiled a (7) 3-2-0 record and earned $90,437. Anasttasia was also a finalist in the TQHA Sale Futurity(RG3) last summer.

Multiple stakes-placed Mia Jet In defeated Dominyun Cartel by a neck in the second trial to record the second fastest time of :17.332 seconds, a 97 speed index. Jockey Luciano Duenez had the riding call for trainer Kenneth Weeks.

An Alabama home-bred, racing for owner-breeder Lester Colom, Jr., Mia Jet In is by multiple stakes sire Jet Black Patriot from the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Pyc First Prize Mia. Second in the Old South Futurity and third in the Evangeline Downs Futurity last season, the brown filly has earned $74,764.

Runner-up Dominyun Cartel held on to the third fastest time of :17.351 seconds, also a 97 speed index. The Indiana-bred son of Dominyun races for owner-breeder Brian Gunder and is conditioned by Bobby Martinez.

Damian Martinez rode the stakes winning colt out of Dreamers Cartel by Corona Cartel. Winner of the Miss Roxie Little Futurity at Indiana Grand in 2018, Dominyun Cartel has earned nearly $121,000.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to Delta Downs on Friday, May 10 to vie for the winner's share of the $74,115 yard purse going 350 yards.
