Bubba Mallard Storms Home To Claim The Open Me A Corona Stakes At Delta Downs


Under jockey John Hamilton, Bubba Mallard scores an easy win in the $50,000 Open Me A Corona Stakes (RG2) at Delta Downs Saturday night for Louisiana-breds.

VINTON, LA—MAY 5, 2018—Delta Downs hosted its only stakes race of the week on Saturday night, the $50,000 Open Me A Corona Stakes (RG2) for Louisiana-bred 3-year-olds and up.

The race was won by Salvador Marquez’s 4-year-old gelding Bubba Mallard, who was ridden to victory by jockey John Hamilton.

Breaking from the outside post position in a field of seven, Bubba Mallard quickly charged toward the lead before drawing clear late to win by one length over La Mos Corona, while Jrs Coronas Shadow wound up another head behind in third.

The Michael Taylor trainee covered the 350-yard distance of the race in a time of 17.329 over a fast track, which equaled a speed index of 99.

The victory by Bubba Mallard was his first stakes score and the fourth overall win of his 14-race career. He earned $30,000 for the effort which raised his bankroll to $77,577.

Bred in the Bayou State by Gerald Patin, Bubba Mallard is a gray by Sir Runaway Dash, out of the First Down Jewel mare Miss Mallard. The Open Me A Corona Stakes was also the first career stakes victory for trainer Michael Taylor.

Sent to the gate at odds of 5-2, Bubba Mallard paid $7.20 to win, $3.20 to place and $2.40 to show. La Mos Corona was worth $3.40 to place and $2.40 to show. Jrs Coronas Shaddow returned $2.80 to show.

Runner-up Los Mos Corona races for owner M & M Stable LLC and trainer Orlando Orozco. Floriberto Maldonado rode the daughter of Coronas Leaving You from the multiple stakes winning Heza Fast Dash mare La Mos Chingono.

Bred by Oscar Rhone, Los Mos Corona suffered her first loss since last July. The six-time winner had won four straight and two stakes. She picked up $10,000 to boost her earnings total to $115,177.

Jrs Coronas Shadow, also a 4-year-old by Coronas Leaving You, earned $5,500 for finishing third. David Alvarez had the riding call for AQHA Racing Champion trainer Kenneth Roberts, Sr. Gary Harstack owns the $213,543 earner who was bred by Julian Stevens III from the Dashing Val mare Shadow Of Colors.

Jw Who Dat, One Hot Flame, Ho Lotta Game and Tf Race Runaway completed the field. San Lorenzo Corona was scratched.

Delta Downs will begin its fourth week of American Quarter Horse racing on Wednesday night with another 10-race program that is set to begin at 6:15 pm.
