Famous Corona Lady Returns in Evangeline Downs Derby Trials


Jon and Donna McPherson's Famous Corona Lady will start in Saturday's Evangeline Downs Derby trials.

OPELOUSAS, LA—NOVEMBER 27, 2015—A total of 44 3-year-olds has been entered in Saturday’s Evangeline Downs Derby trials.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the 400-yard, $75,000-added final on December 19.

Famous Corona Lady, a sorrel daughter of Corona Cartel trained by Kenneth Roberts Sr. for owners Jon and Donna McPherson, drew post 2 in the fourth of five trials. The filly has banked $133,708 from four outs this season, and she was a finalist in the September 6, $2,378,000 All American Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.

Joe Badilla Jr. will ride Famous Corona Lady on Saturday. The filly’s opponents in the fourth heat include Cobalt Creek, a Grade 1-placed son of Walk Thru Fire racing for Victor W. Pryor Jr.’s VWP Jr. Inc. Trained by John Stinebaugh, the gelding has earned $141,541 from seven races this season, and his resume includes a third-place finish in the 440-yard, $900,000 Rainbow Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs in July.

Cobalt Creek drew post 4 and will be ridden by Gilbert Ortiz.
