Louisiana Champions Day Features Three Quarter Horse Stakes

NEW ORLEANS, LA—DECEMBER 4, 2018—Three American Quarter Horse stakes are on the schedule when Fair Grounds Racecourse hosts its annual Louisiana Champions Day on Saturday.

Following is a preview of all three stakes:

Louisiana Champions Day Derby (RG3)

Second Down Leaving, a bay son of Coronas Leaving You racing for Eulalio Argote and Victor Alvarado, is one of a dozen state-bred sophomores entered in this 400-yard, $100,000 stakes.

Second Down Leaving has earned $69,071 from six outs this year, and his season resume includes a neck victory as the 9-10 favorite in the 350-yard, $40,000 Treme Derby (R) at Fair Grounds. The gelding drew post 5 and will be ridden by Antonio Alberto.

Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile Stakes (RG2)

Graded stakes winners Amending The Bar and Eysa Jess Jumpn are among the 12 Louisiana-bred 2-year-olds entered in this 350-yard, $100,000 stakes.

Amending The Bar brings in a three-race win streak that includes a three-quarter length victory in the 350-yard, $435,000 LQHBA Sale Futurity (RG1) at Fair Grounds. A chestnut daughter of Five Bar Cartel, the filly has earned $219,816 from five starts.

Amending The Bar drew post 12 and will be ridden by Eddie Sanchez.

Eysa Jess Jumpn has banked $380,770 from seven races, and his four wins include a head victory as the 19-10 favorite in the 350-yard, $700,000 Lee Berwick Futurity (RG1) at Delta Downs on July 7. The Heza Fast Dash filly is trained by Josue Huitron for owner Jose Estrada Quarter Horses.

Eysa Jess Jumpn drew post 6 and will be ridden by Guadalupe Lucio Jr.

Louisiana Champions Day Classic (RG2)

Rogelio Marquez Jr.’s San Lorenzo Corona drew the rail post for this 440-yard, $100,000 stakes.

A gray 4-year-old son of Coronas Leaving You trained by Jose Luis Sanchez III, San Lorenzo Corona has won his last two starts, the 440-yard, $40,000 Mid-City Stakes (R) at Fair Grounds on September 8, and the 400-yard, $40,000 Opelousas Stakes (R) at Evangeline Downs on November 10.

San Lorenzo Corona will be ridden by Eddie Sanchez.
