VINTON, LA—JUNE 13, 2016—Bobby D. Cox’s Jessa Louisiana Zoom, a daughter of champion Jess Louisiana Blue trained by Kenneth Roberts Sr., is one of 38 Louisiana-bred 3-year-olds entered in Friday’s Delta Downs Derby (RG3) trials at Delta Downs.
Jessa Louisiana Zoom made his season debut with a second-place finish, three-quarters of a length behind winner Telarosa, in the 400-yard, $50,000 Vinton Stakes (R) for state-bred 3-year-olds on May 14. The filly was coming off of a 2-year-old campaign during which she won four of her five starts at Delta, including the $635,000 Lee Berwick Memorial Futurity (RG1) and $274,000 Louisiana Breeders’ Lassie Futurity (RG2).
Jessa Louisiana Zoom drew post 3 and will be ridden by Donald Watson in the third of four trials.
Telarosa, a sorrel Jet Black Patriot filly trained by Roberts for owner Douglas O. Traylor, will be ridden by Lucas Constantin from post 7 in the second heat. Telarosa has banked $193,807 from eight starts, and her four wins include a nose victory as the 8-5 favorite in last year’s $304,000 LQHBA Sale Futurity (RG1) at Fair Grounds.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the $150,000-added Delta Downs Derby final on July 9.
