Louisiana Downs' Quarter Horse Schooling Races Set for February 7 and 8


Louisiana Downs will host schooling races for 2-year-olds paid into the Louisiana Downs Futurity on February 7 and the Mardi Gras Futurity on February 8.

BOSSIER CITY, LA–JANUARAY 26, 2023–Louisiana Downs will host schooling races at the distance of 220-yards for 2-year-olds paid into the Louisiana Downs Futurity on February 7 and the Mardi Gras Futurity on February 8.

These are non-parimutuel races but give young horses valuable experience as they prepare for their 2-year-old racing season!

Horsemen must enter the schooling races in the Louisiana Downs racing office. The entry deadline for Louisiana Downs Futurity schoolers is February 3 and February 4 for the 2-year-olds paid into the Mardi Gras Futurity.

Louisiana Downs Trainer, Jockey and Owner Standings

Through the first three weeks of the 2023 Quarter Horse meet, Xavier Scott tops the trainer standings with five wins. Willie Simien, Jr. follows closely with four trips to the winner’s circle and four trainers, Justin Powell,  Kenny Roberts, Joel Huitron  and  Leonel Hernandez have each won three races.

Last year’s leading rider Ubaldo Luna is off to a blazing start with 7 wins and he and Ricardo Hernandez, Jr. share the lead in in the jockey standings.  Juan Garcia, Jr. is tied with Guadalupe Lucio Jr. with five wins each. Evangeline Downs top rider Arturo Alvarez, Raul Ramirez, Jr., Rolando Cabrera and Rene Hernandez are within striking distance with four wins each.

In the owner’s standings, six horsemen have won two races this meet. Jose O. Barron,  2022 leading owner,  Robert Touchet, Luis Armando Castellanos, Zach Stevenson, Laney Fowler and Byron Crenshaw share the lead heading into the fourth week of the meet.

Louisiana Downs Post Times and Wagering Format

The 46-day Quarter Horse live racing season commenced on Thursday, January 5. Post time is 1:35 pm (Central) each Thursday, Friday and Saturday through Saturday, April 1. Exotic wagers include exacta, trifecta and superfecta, rolling daily doubles on the first six races of the card, Pick 3 wagers on the first five races of each card and a Pick 4 on races 4-7.
