San Lorenzo Jet Sets Fastest Time On Night 1 of Louisiana Laddie Futurity Trails at Delta Downs

San Lorenzo Jet, under jockey David Alvarez, setting the fastest time on night 1 for the $331,880 Louisiana Laddie Futurity (RG2) on Friday night at Delta Downs.

VINTON, LA—MAY 6, 2022—Delta Downs hosted the first eight trials for this year’s $331,880 Louisiana Laddie Futurity (RG2) on Friday night. The five fastest Louisiana-bred colts and geldings from Friday’s action will join the top five from Saturday’s eight trials to make it into the final of the race, which will take place on Saturday, May 28.

The fastest qualifier from Friday night was Rogelio Marquez, Jr.’s San Lorenzo Jet ($10.20), who won the fifth trial of the night under jockey David Alvarez. The Jesus Marquez trainee covered 330 yards in a time of 16.781 seconds, which equaled a speed index of 87. Each race on the Friday program was contested over a fast track.

The win by San Lorenzo Jet came in his career debut. He earned $6,000 for the effort and now has a chance to bank another $165,940 in the final coming up in three weeks if he wins the event.

Bred in Louisiana by Rogers Farm of Tim and Jennie Rogers, San Lorenzo Jet is a 2-year-old bay colt by multiple stakes sire Jet Black Patriot, out of the Fly Jess Fly mare Miss Delta Duck. He was purchased for $49,000 at the 2021 Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Yearling Sale.

Tha Duke, under jockey Arturo Alvarez, picked up his second career win in the fourth trial while posting the second fastest clocking of :16.909 seconds. Racing for owners Ashton Elder, and Miguel Romero, Jr., the son of first-crop sire Rc Me Leaving You was by 1-1/4 lengths. The Louisiana home-bred in out of Precious Perry Girl by Jess Louisiana Blue.

Ja Zooms, a $9,000 LQHBA Sale graduate, ran second to San Lorenzo Jet in the fastest trial to secure the third fastest clocking of :16.947 seconds. Trainer Joel Huitron saddled the son of multiple stakes sire Fast Prize Doc for owner Areli Gutierrez. DSK, Ltd. bred the brown colt from the Azoom mare Zavona. Ja Zooms broke his maiden in his career debut, a Mardi Gras Futurity trial on March 5.

Pk Pure Rogue, under jockey Guadalupe Lucio, Jr., posted the fourth fastest time off a 1-3/4 length win in the second trial. Owner Jose Rodriguez paid $9,200 for the son of multiple stakes sire Heza Fast Rogue.  Pk Pure Rogue clocked the 330 yards in :17.079. Phatt Kat Ranch bred the bay gelding from the Agouti mares Kinky Boots.

Frist-crop sire You Drive I Fly sired Happy Flyer, who finished second to Tha Duke to get the fifth fastest time of :17.099 seconds. Charles Duke Shults trains the brown gelding for owner Patrick Richardson. Richard and Janelle Simon bred the $15,500 LQHBA Sale graduate from the A Regal Choice mare Surfin in Stilettos. Everardo Rodriguez had the riding call.
