Champion Producing Sire The Louisiana Cartel Dies at 15

Champion sire The Louisiana Cartel was euthanized today at age 15.

OPELOUSAS, LA–AUGUST 26, 2022–The Louisiana Cartel, a champion producing sire standing at Louisiana Center For Equine Reproduction, was euthanized today (AUG 26) due to "on going health issues".

The 15-year-old son of leading sire Corona Cartel, out of the G2-placed Louisiana Slew (TB) mare The Louisiana Girl, was among the leading sires each year. In 2022 he is a top 20 leading sire of money of eaners and a top 25 leading sire of 2-year-old money earners. 

From eight crops to race he is the sire of 228 winners (60%), 49 black type (13%), earners of over $9.4 million with average earnings per starter of more than $24,700.

"The Louisiana Cartel meant a lot to this farm. He was a once in a lifetime stallion, and we want to thank Haddad Ranch for entrusting us in managing and caring for a stallion of his stature," said Stephen Deville, stallion manager of Louisiana Center For Equine Reproduction. " He will always have a place here with us."

Owner Jorge Haddad purchased The Louisiana Cartel at the 2008 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale from Jumonville Farms for $90,000.

"First I want to thank Eddy (Cramer) for all his support and guidance through TLCs campaign in Louisiana along with Stephen's (Deville) help and great management during breeding season," Haddad said. "This horse has been a blessing for me and my family. All I can say is that he was a once in a lifetime horse and I'm lucky to have owned him. I am sure the impact he has made in the industry will be felt for years to come and we will miss him a lot."

Also trained by Haddad, The Louisiana Cartel won or placed in eight of 10 career starts and earned $127,941 at 3 and 4. He won the Grade 2 Sam Houston Championship Challenge, Sam Houston Classic (G2),  He was also third in the Firecracker Derby and a finalist in the Remington Park Invitational Championship(G1) and Delta Championship Challenge(G3).
