Late Nominations To Record Setting Mardi Gras Futurity Due January 5

BOSSIER CITY, LA—DECEMBER 29, 2021—Late nominations for what is expected to be a record setting 2022 $350,000-est. Mardi Gras Futurity(RG2) are due Wednesday, January 5th.

"The Mardi Gras Futurity nominations for 2022 have hit a historical record number of 233 horses," LQHBA Executive Director Bruce Salard said this week. "That is up from 174 nominations and 170 entries to the 2021 $349,946 Gras Futurity."

Louisiana-bred foals of 2020 can late nominate to the 300 yard restricted Grade 2 race for $1,700 (includes nomination, payments and penalty) on or before Wednesday, January 5th.

Trials will be contested at Louisiana Downs on Sunday, March 6th and the final will run back Sunday, March 27th. Schooling races at the track for Mardi Gras nominated horses will be conducted on Saturday, February 12th.

Supplemental Nominations for $6,000 can be made at time of entry.

The Mardi Gras Futurity launched the career of many of great Louisiana-Bred runner. Val Fortune won the 2003 edition of the Mardi Gras Futurity for owner Teddy Abrams, Jr. and trainer Heath Taylor. He became the first Accredited Louisiana Bred millionaire and was later inducted to the LQHBA Hall of Fame.

Five years later, Jet Black Patriot, bred and owned by Richard and Janelle Simon, stamped his name in the record books, winning the Mardi Gras, Lee Berwick and LQHBA Breeders Futurity, with a runner-up finish in the All American Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso Downs as well.

Total purse money for the 46 day Louisiana Downs 2022 Quarter Horse meet, scheduled January 10th thru April 7th, is expected to exceed the 2019 purses by approximately 15%.
